Music Notes From Mrs. Rosso

Hello Graebner Families,

The 2017-2018 school year is moving right along in the music room.  Students will be working on many different music skills and concepts throughout the year.  In addition to fulfilling the Michigan Music Education Grade Level Content Expectations, the activities we do in music transfer to help us to develop skills that are useful outside of the music classroom. We are creative in expressing ourselves through movement, performance and composition.   We practice collaboration through working with others in ensembles, work station groups and class discussions. We practice critical thinking as we observe and evaluate music performances and presentations.  Learning music helps widen our window to the world.

Students K-5 have been learning about and reviewing steady beat and practicing singing skills.  Students in grades 2-5 have been reviewing music literacy skills with focus on reading rhythms.  Students in sixth grade have begun their study of band instruments.  All students will be working on music for their upcoming concerts in the months ahead.  Along with practicing for performances, our study of music covers creating, analyzing and connecting music to the world around us.

All students at Graebner will have a performance opportunity this year.  The dates set for these performances are as follows:

  • February 15th – Second Grade and Mrs. Terenzi 6:30. Fourth Grade and Mrs. Hunt 7:30
  • March 22nd – First Grade at 6:30
  • March 27th – Third Grade at 6:30. Fifth Grade and Mrs. Hunts Class at 7:30.
  • April 24th –  Sixth Grade at Henry Ford II PAC for performance with HFII Band, Bemis Band and other 6th grade students from schools who will attend Bemis.  Evening time TBD
  • May 29th - 6:30 Sixth grade concert at Graebner.
  • Kindergarten students will perform during their Kindergarten Completion Celebration in June.  The date and time will be announced later.

A huge thanks to our generous, and hard-working GPTO group for funding the purchase of 13 ukuleles for the music classroom.  These instruments will be used first in grades four and five and later in the year with grades three and possibly two.  The students are very excited about having these instruments to work with.  Thank you GPTO and all who support the group.

If you have any questions about your child’s music education at Graebner, please feel free to contact me.  I am at Graebner Tuesday-Friday each week.  I can be reached by phone at (586) 797-5000 or by email,
